物語の冒頭の場面に次の文章が出てくる。 Shylock did not like him(antonio), More than once the merchant had criticised him in public for charging people high rates of interest on the money he lent them, He also suspected that Antonio despise him for being a Jew and a moneylender. Antonio was a Christian and lent money without charging interest. This had been bad for Shylock's business, so he did not really want to do this man a favour, But - and Shylock almost smiled with pleasure at this thought - it would be a sort of victory to lend money to this man who had always mocked him.
アントニオに金を貸す場面でシャイロックは言う。 'Signor Antonio,' said Shylock. 'You have always treated me badly. You insult me in public because I'm a moneylender. You make fun of my religion. And now you come to me and ask for a loan. What should I do? Should I forget the insults and just give you the three thousand ducats?
